Dear Friends and Community Leaders,

I would appreciate it if you could spread the word about a new course we are launching September 14.  I have a strong interest and passion for helping our Veterans in the area of moral injury and doing anything we can to impact/lessen the suicide rates in this country.  Please see the attachment.
All Veterans and Families:  Reboot Combat Recovery, a 12 Week Course for Veterans and families will be begin September 14. This course will help combat Veterans and families heal from the spiritual and moral injuries of war associated with post-traumatic stress and combat trauma.  Moral injury can manifest itself in the form of anger, anxiety, depression, social withdrawal, and most tragically, suicide.  The symptoms are often linked to deep-rooted soul wounds related to unresolved grief, distrust of God/others, unforgiveness, bitterness, and loss of identity.
Thank you in advance and blessings to you,
Terry

 Women’s Fellowship Retreat Update

It’s getting closer ladies! Our Aug. 5th Retreat is this weekend. Think about a day at Pat Hillman’s cabin with your friends. We’ll share a bible study on our favorite scriptures, get an introduction to the book of Luke and spend time in the woods. Maybe you’ll even decide to extend to Aug.6&7! The cost will be 10$/day. Carpooling will be available.  We will leave the Tulare area about 8:15 in the morning and return by 8:30 in the evening. This will be a great way to round out your summer and begin looking toward the fall.
Youth Group will resume on Wednesday evening, August 16 at 5:30 to 6:45 pm.

Special Events of Holy Week and Easter 2017

First Congregational Church Tulare is housed in an historic white building with a steeple and bells.  We are located at 220 W. Tulare Ave.   Please, come! Let us welcome you.  Our special events and services are as follows:

Palm Passion Sunday

The order of worship is designed to take the worshipper from Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem to the crucifixion.  This service is especially for those who may not be able to attend special services during Holy Week.  Communion will be served.

Maundy Thursday

We celebrate the Last Supper Jesus had with his disciples before his crucifixion.  We remember his new commandment to love one another!

The service will be Thursday, April 13 at 7pm.  This service will feature Scriptures and congregational hymns.  The center piece of the service is communion to which all are welcome.

Good Friday

This cannot be called a celebration; it will be a somber time of prayer and reflection.  The time will include a story of the cross as told by one of the women who was there followed by prayers and the lighting of the candle of hope.

Sunrise Easter Worship

Disciples of Christ-Visalia have passed on to us the tradition of a sunrise service at the Visalia Cemetery, 1300 W. Goshen Ave in Visalia.  Service will start at 6:15 so we can welcome the sunrise.  The service will be followed by a continental breakfast at First Congregational Church in Tulare.

Easter Worship

This joyous service starts with the flowering of the cross.  Worship will include favorite hymns, choir and bell choir, baptisms and confirmation, and communion.

There will be craft activities and an Easter egg hunt for the children.

Evensong

We have one event following shortly after Easter.

This annual event features sacred organ music played by Scott Horton.  This year Evensong will be held Tuesday, April 18 at 6:30 pm.  The service includes a time of memorial for loved ones who have passed away the previous year.

Pastor’s Request for interest in Bible studies!

Pastor’s Ongoing Bible Study

The congregation has voted to increase my hours to ¾ time.  Now I will have time to do some things that I think are especially needed. The first is an ongoing Bible study that deals with the basics of faith.  I plan to make these short term studies of 4 to 6 weeks each.  Each study will be free standing so you may take only the ones that you want to take.  Studies will require at least 5 people sign up in advance.

I plan to offer the first study starting some time the week after May 7.  The topic for the first study will be Biblical Foundations for Our Beliefs and Practices. This class will run for 4 weeks with classes being 1 hour each.

I need your help setting the day and time. I am available to teach Monday through Thursday and on Saturday.  My times are flexible.

I am interested in taking this class. _______________________________(your name)

Please, let me know what you might be interested in studying.  I have some possible topics listed.  You may mark any of these and/or suggest something different.  Remember, these are to be studies that focus on topics that encourage faith development and growth.

Possible topics:

  • Basics of Prayer and Personal Bible Study: A How to Primer
  • The Gospel of Mark
  • Faith and Society: How to Put Faith into Practice in a Secular World
  • Philippians
  • Other biblical book studies ___________________________ (book)

The Glory of Easter 2017

Christmas Events for the 2016 Advent Season

Advent Concert–4 December at 5:30 pm at the Church.

This annual event features musicians and vocalists of the congregation and our extended family. It features our choir, bell choir, pipe organ, and several vocal and instrumental seasonal favorites.

Longest Night Service–21 December at 5:30 pm at the Church.

This is a service designed for those who struggle with the physical and emotional darkness of this time of year. So often our expectations do not match the reality of the season and thus there are feelings of sadness, loneliness, and even despair. This is a contemplative service with candle lighting. We use the time to acknowledge our hurts and light candles of remembrance. Service is followed with fellowship and refreshments.

Christmas Eve Service–24 December at 5:30 pm at the Church.

This is a traditional service that retells the Christmas story through Scripture and song. Worship opens with the playing of the prelude on bagpipe and concludes with candle lighting and the singing of Silent Night. Communion is part of worship and is open to all. We also take an offering for Tulare Emergency Aid.

Christmas Morning Service–10:30 am at the Church.

Christmas day falls on Sunday, so we will celebrate with a child friendly service filled with carols. After worship we will share Happy Birthday Jesus cake! Communion will be served and is open to everyone.
